In Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third in the phenomenal franchise from Summit, the warring vampires and werewolves under Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) negotiate a truce to protect Bella (Kristen Stewart). Under new director, David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy), the bar has been raised dramatically and aesthetically, which extends to the vfx as well.

Alien Attack on SGU

District 9 came in very handy to Image Engine on Stargate Universe, which resumed the second-half of its first season this month on Syfy (Fridays at 9:00 pm). The 15th of 20 episodes, "Lost," airs on Friday and the season finale concludes June 11 with "Incursion (Part 2)." The second season resumes in the fall for the MGM-produced military sci-fi franchise, which is both grittier and younger in tone under the guidance of exec producers Robert Cooper and Brad Wright.

Director Sylvain White's comic adaptation of The Losers tells the story of a vigilante CIA black ops team hell-bent on uncovering a double-crossing plot against them. Under the overall vfx sup. of Richard Yuricich, Image Engine completed 147 shots for the film featuring no less than planes, buses, bullets & explosions. We talk to Image Engine visual effects supervisor Simon Hughes & visual effects producer Steve Garrad.

Prevising 2012's 'Yellowstone'

A key sequence in director Roland Emmerich's 2012 features the eruption of Yellowstone National Park as the stars of the film flee via a Winnebago and, eventually, by plane. Previs for this 'Yellowstone' sequence was undertaken by Image Engine in collaboration with the film's overall visual effects supervisors Volker Engel and Marc Weigert. With 2012 now out on DVD, Image Engine's previs technical supervisor Cameron Widen and VFX executive producer Shawn Walsh talk to vfxblog about their work for the sequence and about their previs philosophy.

Something Worth Getting Out of Bed For

The sci-fi hit District 9 was conceived in New Zealand and shot in South Africa. But the news that it had received four Academy Award nominations on Tuesday set off celebrations in Vancouver, where many of the film's key players live.

Director Neill Blomkamp was fast asleep when the news of his film's best picture nomination was announced at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to his partner, Terri Tatchell.

"I'm normally a happy person, but I'm a really happy person today," Tatchell said with a laugh. She received a nomination for best adapted screenplay, along with Blomkamp.

Vancouver Visual Effects Companies Up for Film Honours

It was a good week for Vancouver visual effects companies Image Engine and The Embassy. On Thursday morning, they received a joint nomination for best visual effects from the Orange British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), the British Oscars, for their work on District 9. Then, Thursday night, they were in Los Angeles to pitch their District 9 work to the Academy Awards nominating committee.
